Plumbing emergencies don’t announce themselves. They happen at 11pm on a Sunday, the morning of a holiday party, or right in the middle of your workday. And in Anaheim, where a large portion of the housing stock is aging and many homes sit on concrete slabs, certain types of plumbing failures are more common than homeowners realize.

Knowing what to do in the first five minutes of a plumbing emergency can be the difference between a manageable repair and tens of thousands of dollars in water damage. Here are five scenarios OC homeowners should be prepared for — and exactly what to do if they happen.

1. Burst or Ruptured Pipe

Burst pipes are less common in Southern California than in colder climates, but they happen here too — especially in older homes where galvanized pipes have corroded, or during rare cold snaps when exposed outdoor pipes freeze. They can also occur from sudden pressure spikes or physical damage during renovation.

What to do immediately:

  •       Shut off the main water supply to your home — know where this valve is before an emergency.
  •       Turn off your water heater (to prevent it running dry).
  •       Open faucets to drain remaining water from the lines.
  •       Document the damage with photos for insurance purposes.
  •       Call a licensed emergency plumber.

2. Sewage Backup

If sewage is backing up into your bathtub, toilets, or floor drains, you have a main sewer line blockage. This is one of the most unpleasant plumbing emergencies — and one of the most urgent.

What to do:

  •       Stop using all water in the home immediately — every flush or sink use sends more sewage in the wrong direction.
  •       Don’t use chemical drain cleaners — they won’t reach a main line blockage.
  •       Avoid contact with the sewage backflow — it contains harmful bacteria.
  •       Call a plumber who has hydro-jetting and video inspection capability.

3. Water Heater Failure or Leak

A water heater that’s actively leaking or has ruptured needs immediate attention. A failing tank can release 40–80 gallons of water, causing significant damage to floors and walls — especially in garages and interior closets where they’re commonly installed in OC homes.

What to do:

  •       Turn off the water supply line to the water heater (the cold water inlet valve at the top).
  •       For gas heaters, turn the gas valve to the “pilot” position.
  •       Turn off the electricity at the breaker for electric heaters.
  •       Attach a hose to the drain valve and drain the tank if it’s safe to do so.
  •       Call for water heater repair or replacement.

4. Clogged or Overflowing Toilet

A toilet that won’t stop running water or is about to overflow is a stressful but manageable situation if you act fast.

What to do:

  •       Remove the tank lid and push the flapper down to stop water flow into the bowl.
  •       Turn off the water supply valve behind the toilet (clockwise to close).
  •       Use a toilet plunger — not a sink plunger — to attempt clearing the blockage.
  •       If the clog doesn’t clear with plunging, don’t keep flushing. Call a plumber.

5. Gas Line Smell Near HVAC or Appliances

Natural gas emergencies require the most urgent response. If you smell rotten eggs or sulfur — the additive that makes natural gas detectable — near your furnace, stove, water heater, or anywhere else:

  •       Do not turn on or off any lights or electrical switches.
  •       Do not use your phone inside the home.
  •       Leave the home immediately, leaving doors open as you go.
  •       Call SoCalGas from outside or from a neighbor’s home.
  •       Do not re-enter until the gas company has cleared the building.

This situation requires a licensed plumber and gas line specialist to inspect and repair before your appliances can be used again.

One Thing Every OC Homeowner Should Do Today

Find your main water shutoff valve and make sure every adult in your household knows where it is and how to operate it. In a water emergency, being able to shut off the water in 30 seconds versus 5 minutes is the difference between a small repair and a major remediation job.
